Portable Traffic Signals application form

Terms and conditions

Read the below terms and conditions carefully before continuing with your application.

Use this form to apply for approval to use portable traffic signals and any of the following apply:

shuttle signals for a period in excess of six months
shuttle signals not controlled by vehicular actuation
signals used in conjunction with a haul route crossing
any multi-phase signals
shuttle signals where the length controlled is 300m or longer
shuttle signals that includes a junction or side-road
any temporary signal controlled pedestrian crossing

You must:

Submit this application to us at least seven calendar days before you start using the portable signals. We’ll refuse and return your application if there’s not enough notice or if any required information is not provided.
Wait until you’ve received approval from us before installing portable signals on site. You’ll be asked to remove signals if you can’t produce a valid certificate of approval.
Tell us if the location for your portable signals is near permanent traffic signals so we can decide if it's necessary to switch these off during your works. Only Bristol City Council or one of our representatives can switch them off or on. The cost for switching the permanent signals off and on is £164 per site visit Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, or £240 at any other time, per site visit.
Give us a purchase order or other reference if you want permanent signals to be switched off. We’ll charge you an administration fee if you provide us with an incorrect invoice address.

Note:

Approval to use portable signals is required in accordance with the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions. All portable traffic signal equipment must conform to the latest technical specifications for traffic controllers and detectors. All items of equipment must be fitted with a label showing the relevant approval.

The provision, operation and maintenance of all signs, lighting and guarding of the works must be in accordance with the Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 8 and read in conjunction with the Code of Practice for street works 'Safety at Street Works and Road Works'. The supervisor of the works must be qualified as required under Section 67 of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
